Lucky Mushroom Toast
North Asheville, you are so lucky. You have a ton of great places to eat now! I lived up on North Charlotte Street, behind the JCC for 8 long years, and maaaan… the pickin’s were slim. Now days you’ve got a plethora, including the brand new Waterbird Cafe, located in the space where Rosebud Video used to be, next to Ultimate Ice Cream!

Depending on the time of day, there’s a lack of cafés up that way, so the fact that you can get a cup of coffee at Waterbird is great, but on a recent visit, it was the food that really impressed me! I ordered the MBLT (the “M” is for mozzarella), and my GF, Dawn, ordered the panzanella, which is a “bread salad.” Both were great, but the kitchen also sent out some of their mushroom toast (see picture), and whoa. That was a show stopper.

Bread from OWL Bakery, a ton of sauteed local mushrooms, local cheese, local greens and micro-greens, plan an awesome sweet tomato jam, and I dunno what else. A ton of butter, or something. It was frickin’ goood, whatever it was. The food at Waterbird gets two thumbs-up from me so far, and I’ll be going back to my old neighborhood more often than ever to pay a visit their menu!
