What you need to know

Asheville Community Yoga is a nonprofit yoga center at 8 Brookdale Road off Elk Mountain Road, a few minutes from downtown and UNC Asheville, with nearly 100 donation-based classes a week. The schedule covers Gentle Yoga, Level 1 and Level 2 Vinyasa Flow, Warm and Hot Yoga, Yin, Prenatal, Yoga for Seniors, Meditation and Qigong, and mats and props are free. The center also runs a 250-hour Yoga Teacher Training with financial aid, a three-weekend Yoga Immersion, a 30-hour Yin continuing education course, workshops like Alignment 101 and series like Snuggle and Stretch Baby and Me Yoga, plus a monthly raffle and a pre-loved clothing shop.

Local's Tip

Come 10 minutes early for your first class and park in the gravel lot up the hill behind the building, not on the street, and follow the one-way arrows out to Valley Park Road. Spots next to the center are for teachers and people with special needs.

What the locals say

Locals come for the pay-what-you-can model, since donations keep the doors open and nobody gets turned away for money. Look for the mural on the side of the building and the garden path out back.
