Graveyard Fields Part 1 (Lower Falls)

Add to list

What you need to know

Lower Falls, also called Second Falls, is the most popular waterfall at Graveyard Fields, off the Blue Ridge Parkway at Milepost 418.8, about an hour southwest of Asheville. From the Graveyard Fields parking area, a short paved and wooden-stair trail drops to the Yellowstone Prong, and it's roughly a half-mile round trip to the base of the falls. The falls spill over a wide rock face into a pool, and the open valley around it fills with wildflowers in summer and blueberries in late summer. Hikers who want more can keep going to Upper Falls on a longer loop.

Local's Tip

Go early on weekends, since the parking lot fills fast. Check the Parkway's road status before you drive, because sections close in winter weather.

What the locals say

Local families and regulars bring visiting friends here for a quick waterfall hike, and kids love splashing in the cool pool on hot summer days.
