Beaver Lake Bird Sanctuary is a free wetland nature preserve on Merrimon Avenue in North Asheville, run by Blue Ridge Audubon. A 3/8-mile accessible boardwalk loop winds through about 10 acres of marsh and woods with overlooks onto Beaver Lake, and more than 220 bird species have been spotted here over the years. A longer path of about 2 miles circles the whole lake for an easy walk. Blue Ridge Audubon leads a free guided bird walk the first Saturday of every month, meeting at the gazebo. The sanctuary is open dawn to dusk every day of the year. Blue Ridge Audubon is replacing 500 feet of the boardwalk with longer-lasting composite from November 2026 into spring 2027.
Go early in the morning, when the birds are most active. Dogs aren't allowed and there are no restrooms, and if the small lot is full, park at the dam lot at Merrimon and Glen Falls.
Neighbors treat it as a quiet morning loop with binoculars, and birders count it as one of the best spots in town to see what's passing through each season.
