Asheville Humane Society is Buncombe County's only open-admission animal shelter and adoption center, on Forever Friend Lane in West Asheville. It never turns away an animal in need, and the Adoption Center finds homes for thousands of dogs, cats, rabbits, guinea pigs and farm animals every year, with one-on-one adoption counseling for every match.
The Adoption Center is open Monday to Saturday 10 to 6 and Sunday noon to 4. Ask about adoption counseling before you visit so staff can line up the right dog or cat.
Locals also lean on the shelter after adoption day: public dog training classes, a Pet Help Center with vet assistance vouchers and pet food distribution, lost and found help, and volunteer and foster programs. Its thrift store at 50 River Ridge Drive helps fund the work.
