12 Bones Smokehouse and Brewing is a barbecue joint and brewery on Hendersonville Road in Arden, just south of Asheville, open every day from 11 to 8. Angela and Bryan King moved the smokehouse into an old industrial building by the railroad tracks in 2019 and put a brewery in with it, so you get ribs and house beer under one roof.

The baby back ribs come four ways: Nekkid, Brown Sugar, Blueberry Chipotle and a very hot Pineapple Habanero. Plates come with two sides and cornbread, and the meats are smoked over oak and cherry. Sixteen taps rotate through ales, lagers and seasonals brewed in the back.

Ask anyone around here what to order and you'll hear Blueberry Chipotle, sweet with a kick. Regulars argue over sides, and the Damn Good Corn Puddin', jalapeño cheese grits, collards and mashed sweet potatoes all have their fans. It's the kind of place where you walk up to the counter, order a beer with your food, and it shows up fast.
