Barrelhouse Lunch Junket
I recently took an official Asheville Food Tours lunch junket out to The Barrelhouse in North Asheville with my friend, boss and fellow food tour guide, Paddy Riels. We ordered a small feast of various things from the menu, took a bunch of pictures of it and then tucked right in.
We started with — and both gave the thumbs-up to — the deep-fried deviled eggs, which are crusted in panko breadcrumbs and have a very tangy, creamy, crunchy, warm and satisfying taste. Definitely recommended!
We also enjoyed the elk burger, which we split. This was a first for both of us, as we had never eaten elk before! It was quite good, and to me, largely indistinguishable from the various grass-or-apple-or-corn-or-spent grain-fed beef that we get around here, which all have their own distinct flavor.
To be honest, I don’t have a refined enough palate to tell the difference between various red meats yet. This burger could have been bison for all I know, but the fact that Paddy and I really liked it is all that matters. It came topped with Swiss, mushrooms, caramelized onions and Dijonaisse mustard, all on a beautiful Geraldine’s Bakery brioche bun.
Pierogies take up a large portion of the both the dessert menu and the regular menu, and of the 3 pierogies we tried — mushroom and Swiss, Buffalo chicken, and cheesesteak — the third was my favorite.
It was so good, in fact, that I will be going back to try their actual Philly, which they apparently only serve on Wednesdays. I’ll be trying their dessert pierogies next time too, as we were too full to order dessert on this visit. They have apple and chocolate, and they are deep fried — gim!
Try The Barrelhouse yourself and let me know what you think. It’s relatively new to the scene, and I feel as though there might be a lot of potential for deliciousness there.
Don't forget: You can find specials, deals and events from Barrelhouse every day on their Dig Local profile.
