Rooftop Ramen

From way down low, to way up high, the eaters in Asheville can enjoy the best locally sourced, expertly prepared, amazingly delicious food and drinks at various altitudes without ever leaving city limits!

I’m generally a cellar-dweller by nature, but whenever I have a chance, I ride the elevator to the 8th floor of the Hyatt Hotel downtown to try the incredible food of Chef Philip Bollhoefer at The Montford Rooftop Bar.

My most recent dining experience with Chef Philip was his first “Sake It To Me Tuesday,” which was every bit as delicious and satisfying as every previous meal I’ve had courtesy of his kitchen.

Chef Philip is one of Asheville’s most talented, thoughtful, contemporary young chefs, in my opinion. His absolute love of local ingredients is evident in the heartfelt sense of camaraderie he expresses when talking about the regional food growers and providers that he works with. His attention to detail, skill, training and sense of adventure all come together on every single plate he presents — whether it’s brunch, lunch, dinner or bar food.

Enjoy stunning views while you dine at The Montford Rooftop Bar.

The menu for Sake It To Me Tuesday was small and efficient — just like the kitchen at the rooftop, which might be one of the smallest in downtown — consisting of just 3 items: soy ginger caramel wings; grilled pork shoulder with a liver pâté banh mi sandwich; and pork shoulder ramen. Both the banh mi and the pork shoulder in the ramen were from Hickory Nut Gap Farm, and the pâté on the sandwich was from American Pig — both are trusted favorites with local eaters.

I tried all 3 things on the menu, of course, and woweverything was so dang good, just thinking about it right now is making me want more!

It’s best to fall in love with Chef Philip’s cooking rather than any particular dish. His menus change so frequently that by the time you’re done reading this, it might be completely different. The most useful advice I can give you is follow The Montford Rooftop Bar on Facebook, Instagram and, of course, the Dig Local website and app, because that’s the best way to find out what Chef Philip has on the menu that day.

Every bite this chef has ever fed me has been stellar, so even if you’re not on social media, get the Dig Local app or just pop in — or up! — and eat whatever he’s got for you.
