The words ebb and flow are all about appreciating the cycles of existence, according to Adam Caddick and Lauren Loiacono — the owners of Ebb & Flow Massage Therapy Center. They believe it is the awareness that nothing remains the same for long.
“We have had many ups and downs through the course of our lives together,” Caddick explained. “And this was the name that found resonance with both of us.”
Before Adam and Lauren opened Ebb & Flow in West Asheville, they had both worked for many years at various odd jobs.
“Lauren worked in restaurants and then in social work,” Caddick said, “and I had an array of jobs ranging from working at a foundry, driving an ambulance as an EMT and several years at Home Depot.” But they were both still studying massage during their day jobs.
But once they both became licensed massage and bodywork therapists (LMBTs), they had a new goal in mind to open a massage therapy center of their own.
“After being unimpressed with what many businesses were offering their massage therapists — generally low wages and basically exploitation of the workers — we made a plan to start our own place,” Caddick said.
They saw a big “For Rent” sign in front of a building on Haywood Road, called up the landlord and a week later Ebb & Flow Massage and Therapy Center was in the works.
The two were inspired to make massage therapy affordable for their community, while also paying their staff high rates to encourage the best massages possible every time, as well as providing a positive work atmosphere for all.
“We feel that all of our experience as employees has enhanced our ability to give our staff a supportive work environment,” Caddick said, “and it shows in the quality of their bodywork.”
Adam and Lauren take pride in their high-quality massage, using only organic massage lotion that supports the health of our clients and the environment; and their cozy tea room, which carries only fair-trade and organic teas and is definitely a unique space offered to clients. But they are always thinking of new ways to offer clients stress relief, help them maintain health muscles and joints, and keep their spirits light.
Ebb & Flow will soon introduce an add-on menu to their current list of services, which will include CBD massage, hot towels, aromatherapy and more.
“We never gave up, no matter how difficult running a business proved to be,” Caddick said. “And eventually, we found our groove and it became easier to be more consistent and attentive to all the business's needs.”
Ebb & Flow often has monthly specials, and they also offer half-off chair massages every Friday! Check out their Dig Local profile for all their upcoming events and deals.
