Building Community Using Art
with Foundation Studios

A new community art center nurtures creativity in Asheville

Ever since Reid Dawson first founded Modern Wave Art Gallery in Asheville in 2017, his mission statement has been to “Utilize Art to Build Community.” With humble beginnings in a tiny shared studio, his vision was much larger. Seven months ago that dream came to fruition in a 8000+ sq space, housing dozens of artists. This is Foundation Studios.

This new home was curated with the owners of a vacant building in the River Arts District. Conceived as a place to enjoy, create, and display art, the new community art center features not only Modern Wave Art Gallery and Reid Dawson Metal Art, but also 20 other artist studios and 2 galleries.

When asked how his business had changed since it began, Dawson replied, “From 500-1,000-8,000 Sq Ft! Big changes since day one, and we're blessed for the opportunities that came to us. We've grown to accommodate our mission. We wanted to give the opportunity to provide artists affordable studio space and give everyone the chance to enjoy art, from watching the artists, to making the art.”

One of Dawson’s greatest passions is being able to collaborate with local businesses and nonprofits. Their rapidly growing list of collaborators include the Haywood Street Congregation, Riverlink, The Hope Crest for Women, The Hop, and French Broad River Brewery. The studio was built for the community by the community, and prioritizes helping it to grow. With the arts in public schools in constant jeopardy, the studio’s classroom space provides the opportunity for budding artists to discover their talents, and is a great after school program option which nurtures creativity. While the studio hosts everything from glass, metalwork, pottery, and paintings, Dawson sees art just about everywhere he looks in Asheville from our master chefs to our creative brewers.

Foundation Studios just had their successful grand opening celebration this past weekend, but not to worry as plenty more events are planned for the future. Some upcoming events are Thirsty Thursdays, where there will be discounts on drinkware. Look for a schedule coming soon featuring daily art classes, and art demos on the first Friday of every month with wines from local wineries, cheese, and even concerts.

“The road to success is always under construction!” Dawson stated. “One of the hardest things we've dealt with was finding a spot we truly loved enough to call home. You got to give what life gives you though, and we always made the best of our situation. We are extremely excited for our new endeavors at the Foundation Studios. It's a dream to do what I love, and there's no better place to do that than here! We are happy to call Asheville home.”
