Pokin' around at Yum Sushi Burrito and Poke

During its construction, I couldn’t help but notice that a restaurant space had been included in the new condo building on Asheland Avenue, right across the street from the downtown bus depot! When I saw a “coming soon!” sign advertising a concept called “Yum Sushi Burrito Hawaiian Style Poke” I got a little excited. That’s a lotta words, and one of them I had to look up when a Facebook follower asked what it meant later on. So, just in case, according to Wikipedia

“Poke (pronounced “pokey” or “po-kay”) is diced raw fish served either as an appetizer or as a main course and is one of the main dishes of Native Hawaiian cuisine."

Think: Sushi. Pretty much. The burrito part? Well, the poke / sushi came all wrapped-up and served burrito style, in a giant nori sheet. Nori being thin seaweed wraps, used for sushi. So, like a giant sushi roll, served burrito style. Boom. Got it?

I have to admit, I had no idea what to expect! I even thought it could come in some sort of tortilla. If you don’t know what something is, don’t feel bad asking. I’ve been alive for fiddy three years, and eating food during all of them, but I had never heard of a “sushi burrito” until just one minute ago.

Anyhhoo, I ordered their signature “Yum’s Classic” wrap, which has ahi tuna, salmon, romaine lettuce, seaweed salad, mango, edamame (green baby soy beans), sweet corn, sriracha aioli, and unagi sauce, which is like a thick, sweet BBQ sauce used in a lot of Japanese and Polynesian dishes, including poke!

It was indeed, very YUMmy! The fish was fresh and delicious and melted in my mouth, the rice was cooked just right, the mango and other toppings were all great. I ended up kinda dipping mine in some extra unagi and soy sauces. I’m a sauce hound.

I recommend the poke burrito or bowl for those who enjoy uncooked fish, but for those who don’t, I recommend the gyoza pork dumplings, which are deep fried, and very delicious! They come with a side of the sriracha aioli and unagi sauce for dippin’, and believe me, dip I did! The dumplings were very hot ‘n’ crispy around the edges, and steaming on the inside, and had a lot of really nice flavor. Two thumbs up for these.

I recommend Yum for all! If you’re adventurous, go for the poke, if you like deep fried stuff, they gots that too!
