Where to Go, What to Do, Everyday

Dig Local - Weekly Scoop : August 6 - August 12, 2018 - Asheville, NC

“We learned how to ferment over a decade ago from our Amish friends at our first off-grid homestead. Now we are committed to sharing our love of fermenting with Asheville and the rest of the world!”

-Meg Chamberlain, Owner, Fermenti Foods

They seemingly came out of nowhere. They started popping up on tacos, offered as a side dish to traditional southern-fried chicken, and even being slathered on homestyle, buttermilk pancakes. It’s safe to say that some of us might have been a little skeptical at first, but now, from kimchi to sauerkraut, fermented foods have made their always-zesty footprint on Asheville’s culinary scene, and they’re here to stay.

Meg Chamberlain founded Fermenti Foods back in September of 2016 with the dream of accomplishing three goals: culturing the surrounding community through charitable events, preserving the fermenting heritage by educational outreach, and supporting sustainable practices for food resiliency. When asked about her favorite part of being a local business, Meg responded, “Asheville is the best place to live, love, and create! We have an awesome community of foodies who are incredibly supportive.”

With all of the support being given to Fermenti, Meg has also made sure to give back to the community. Exceeding her original goals set for the business, the opening of the Fermenti Foods Mountain Farm is providing local jobs and promoting the use of locally sourced produce.

So if you’re ever at one of Asheville’s tailgate markets, or you see her at the 2nd Annual WNC Fermenting Festival in Marshall this Fall, make sure to stop by and try some of her famous selection! If you’re lucky, she might even tell you about her wedding at Burning Man.
