Weekly Scoop (Oct. 8-14) - Hemp, Marijuana, CBD: What's the Difference?

Homegrown: From Seed to Sale in WNC

"Hemp does not get you high! Unless you use it to make a rope and climb a tree."
Franny’s Farmacy CBD Dispensary is now open for business at 211 Merrimon Ave. in Asheville. This new location offers customers CBD tinctures, CBD oil, topicals, edibles, smokables and more all derived from industrial hemp grown directly on Franny’s Farm — an organic farm and eco-event center.

“Our vision is to pave the way for a line of cannabinoid wellness products that promote a healthy body and mind,” Frances Tacy, the owner of Franny’s Farmacy, said. Tacy is the first female hemp grower in North Carolina.

Hemp, CBD, cannabis, marijuana — some people get confused when any of these topics arise. But how are these products different and what do they do to your body?

First you should know that hemp and marijuana are both classified as cannabis, but the main difference between the two is the amount of THC — the psychoactive chemical that gives you a "high" feeling — that can be found within each plant. Hemp is classified as a low-THC cannabis plant while marijuana is classified as a high-THC cannabis plant.

You should also know that CBD, or cannabidiol, is the same plant compound regardless of whether its derived from hemp or marijuana. But CBD derived from industrial hemp contains no more than 0.3% of THC, meaning you don't get "high" from it. Most commonly people use CBD for medical reasons, including pain, anxiety and insomnia relief.

Currently, North Carolina law allows farmers to grow industrial hemp as part of the state’s hemp research pilot program, which launched in spring of 2017. Since this program launched, the number of licensed hemp growers throughout North Carolina has doubled with representation in nearly every county, according to the Asheville Citizen Times.

It was during this time that Tacy actually became the first female hemp grower in all of North Carolina.

“As farmers, we are committed to the highest standards for growing hemp to bring you quality products crafted with care,” she said.

The CBD consumer market is projected to grow to $2.1 billion by 2020, according to the Hemp Business Journal. As the market continues to grow, knowledge about CBD and hemp needs to grow with it.

Tacy and other industrial hemp farmers around the country are urging citizens to become educated on the multiple benefits and scientific evidence behind this versatile compound.
