Basketry Workshop: How to make a Two-Pie Basket

The Scoop

Interested in the craft of basketry? Southern Highland Craft Guild member, Susan Taylor, will be hosting multiple basketry classes in 2024! Join Susan on February 20th at the Folk Art Center Boardroom for a day of learning and creating. In this class, you will be crafting a pie basket. This is a basket where you can carry your pies, cakes, and other baked goods to the homes of friends and family, potluck suppers, festivals, and bake sales. It is commonly known as a “picnic basket”. This basket is relatively easy and fun to weave and is created to last a lifetime! Consider joining the class with a friend, or come alone and make friends as you learn! Susan is a native of the coal mining village of Shady Spring, West Virginia. As a child, she watched her mother, Mae Alice Taylor, weave functional baskets. In 2002, after back surgery limited Mae's mobility, it was time for mother to pass to daughter her precious knowledge of the art of basket weaving. Susan describes that time as "finally coming home". The combination of fibers and artistry had opened a new avenue of self-discovery for her.
