Cats and dogs are exposed to plants and plant materials in the garden, home environment and as part of their normal diet. Many plants, plant materials and horticultural products are safe for pet animals to consume or be exposed to but others are potentially hazardous. This class will focus on how plants and plant materials found in the garden or home may adversely affect pet animals. The presenter is a veterinarian, clinical nutritionist, small animal internist and extension master gardener volunteer who will bring practical ideas about how to keep pets safe around plants and gardens.

Phil Roudebush is a native of Indiana and lived in Colorado, Missouri, Mississippi and Kansas before moving to North Carolina in 2015. He is a retired veterinarian who has worked in small animal practice, taught in several veterinary schools and did research, product development and technical communication in the animal health industry. Phil has maintained a large vegetable garden, herb garden, pumpkin patch, water garden and a 30-acre native grass hay pasture.

Located within the scenic Pisgah National Forest just south of downtown Asheville, The North Carolina Arboretum encompasses 434 acres of stunning cultivated gardens, hiking and biking trails, and outdoor discovery spaces. Easily accessible via the Blue Ridge Parkway and located at 100 Frederick Law Olmsted Way, the Arboretum is a premier destination for nature lovers, families, and outdoor enthusiasts.
