Sand Hill Kitchen is a scratch-made breakfast and lunch counter inside the BP station at Sand Hill and Sardis Roads, right where West Asheville runs into Enka-Candler. Chef and owner Jamie Wade opened it in January 2017, and in 2022 a statewide magazine contest named her North Carolina's Fried Chicken Champ.

Everyone talks about the buttermilk fried chicken sandwich with house dilly pickles, cheddar and herbed Duke's mayo, but the Reuben, the burgers, the beet sandwich and the breakfast burritos hold their own. The chips are hand cut and fried in house, and the banana pudding takes after her grandmother's. Breakfast runs Wednesday through Saturday and lunch Tuesday through Saturday. It's closed Sunday and Monday.

Locals will tell you it's the best food you'll find at a gas station, and the fried chicken sandwich has been winning local votes since the first year. It's also part of Bridge Meals, so anyone can walk in and ask for a free meal, no questions asked.
