Shindig on the Green at Pack Square Park

The Scoop

Shindig on the Green kicks off its 60th season at Pack Square Park. Since 1967, this free Saturday evening gathering has celebrated Southern Appalachian mountain music and dance. Musicians from across Western North Carolina come together to play old-time fiddle tunes, bluegrass standards, and mountain ballads. The evening starts along about sundown (that's 7 PM for the watch-wearers) and runs until 10 PM on the Roger McGuire Green in front of City Hall. Expect flatfoot dancing, clogging, smooth dancing, and the occasional square dance caller getting folks up and moving. Bring a lawn chair or a blanket. Bring the kids. Bring an instrument if you play. Presented by the Folk Heritage Committee, Shindig is free, open to the public, and one of the best things about summer in Asheville.
