FREE SHOW. PATIO: Dave Desmelik with Laura Blackley plays The Grey Eagle on Friday, October 2. Put it on the calendar now so you don't miss it.

The Grey Eagle holds about 550 but has that listening room thing going on where the crowd knows when to shut up and let the music breathe. You can grab a seat if you want one, but when an act commands the room, the whole place goes church-quiet real fast. The taqueria on-site means you can eat before the show without leaving, which helps since parking around Clingman is always a gamble.

The Grey Eagle is a River Arts District music venue and Asheville's longest-running all-ages room, with something on the calendar almost every night: indie bands, bluegrass legends, punk and the occasional hip-hop set. It started in the 1990s in a garage and grew into a 550-capacity hall with a big stage, great sound, an open dance floor, a patio and an in-house taqueria pouring craft beer.

Locals call The Grey Eagle the real deal for Asheville music, whether it's a local band or a national tour. The crowd is welcoming and into it, and the venue often hosts benefit shows and community events.
