Head straight east from downtown and you're there in ten minutes, with a massive lot that makes parking actually painless for once. The meadow setup means you can spread out with a blanket, grab something from the food trucks, and let the kids and leashed dogs roam while you post up near the covered stage with a beer from Asheville's oldest brewery.

Highland Brewing is Asheville's first craft brewery, on a 40-acre campus off Old Charlotte Highway in East Asheville. Oscar Wong started it in 1994 on old dairy equipment in the basement of Barley's Taproom, and Gaelic Amber Ale and Cold Mountain Winter Ale have been on the list ever since.

These days the taproom pours Daycation IPA, Highland Haze, Highland Pilsner and small batches you only find on site. Bands play four nights a week in the taproom and out in the Meadow, food trucks park daily, and there's an 18-hole disc golf course, sand volleyball courts and a natural playground for kids. Open daily, noon on weekdays and 11 on weekends.

Locals treat it like a backyard. Families spread out on the lawn while the kids run the playground, disc golfers stop in after a round, and the Meadow fills up on weekend afternoons when a band is playing. Cold Mountain release weekend in November is the one people put on the calendar.
